How a digital detox works
Most retreats ask you to hand in your phone and laptop on arrival, or keep them for one set hour a day. In their place come a simple timetable — yoga, meditation, walks, therapies, meals at regular times — and plenty of unstructured quiet.
The first two or three days are often the hardest. Centres plan for this with more activity at the start and more stillness later on. Your concierge stays reachable by the centre’s landline or a shared phone, and your family can be given an emergency number.
What it can include
Phones stored safely; a set window for essential messages, if you want one.
Daily yoga, breathing and meditation, including yoga nidra for sleep.
Walks through gardens, forests, beaches or mountain trails.
Abhyanga, Shirodhara and other calming treatments, if you wish.
Quiet time, sometimes with guided sessions on habits.

Questions guests ask
Will I have no contact at all?
That is up to you. Many guests keep a short daily window, and the centre always has a phone for emergencies.
Where are the best places for a digital detox?
Quiet Kerala centres, the hills above Rishikesh and Himalayan retreats suit it well, as do secluded parts of South Goa out of season.
