What Panchakarma means

Pancha means five and karma means action. Panchakarma is the name for five classical procedures that Ayurveda uses to clear what it considers excess dosha from the body. In practice, few guests receive all five: the physician chooses the ones that suit you, and some are rarely offered at wellness centres at all.

It is the most intensive programme in Ayurveda, and it is not a spa break. Expect early nights, a simple diet, rest days and a physician who checks on you regularly.

The five actions

Vamana

Therapeutic emesis, carried out under close supervision. Offered selectively.

Virechana

Therapeutic purgation with herbal preparations, usually on a planned day with rest.

Basti

Herbal decoctions or oils given as an enema, often as a course over several days.

Nasya

Herbal oils or preparations administered through the nose.

Raktamokshana

Classical bloodletting. Rarely part of a wellness programme.

The three stages

Purvakarma — preparation

Several days of snehana (oleation: medicated ghee taken by mouth and daily oil massage) and swedana (herbal steam or sweating).

Pradhanakarma — the main procedures

The actions the physician has chosen, on planned days, with rest in between.

Paschatkarma — after-care

Samsarjana krama: a gradual return from light gruels to normal food, over several days. This is part of the programme, not an optional extra.

A typical day

  1. Wake, warm water, gentle walk
  2. Medicated ghee or herbal preparation, as prescribed
  3. Oil massage and steam
  4. Procedure of the day, then rest
  5. Light lunch from the centre’s kitchen
  6. Physician’s check-in; gentle yoga or breathing
  7. Early, simple dinner
  8. Lights out

An illustration only. Each centre and practitioner sets their own timetable.

Who it suits

  • Guests who want the classical Ayurvedic programme and can give it two to three weeks
  • Those who can rest fully — no business travel during the stay
  • People comfortable with a simple diet and an early routine
Check first

The physician screens every guest. Panchakarma is usually not advised in pregnancy, soon after surgery, or with certain heart, kidney and other conditions or medicines. Bring your reports and a full medicine list.

Questions guests ask

How long does Panchakarma take?

Classical Panchakarma usually takes 14 to 21 days, including the preparation and after-care stages. Shorter programmes exist, but the physician sets the length after assessing you.

Is Panchakarma painful?

It is not painful, but it is demanding. Some procedures are uncomfortable, and many guests feel tired during the programme. Rest is built into the schedule.

Can I work remotely during Panchakarma?

We advise against it. The programme relies on rest, and centres often ask guests to keep screens to a minimum.

What happens after I go home?

The physician gives you a diet and routine for the following weeks. The first days after the programme matter most, so avoid flying straight into a busy schedule.
