What Karkidakam is
Karkidakam is the last month of the Malayalam calendar, falling at the height of the south-west monsoon, roughly from mid-July to mid-August. In Kerala it has long been a time for rest, prayer and care of the body, and families traditionally prepare Karkidaka kanji, a medicinal rice gruel cooked with herbs.
Ayurvedic centres in Kerala offer seasonal programmes — Karkidaka Chikitsa — built around this tradition. The cool, damp air and the slower pace of the monsoon are considered a good setting for oil therapies and rejuvenation.
What a monsoon programme includes
The physician assesses you and chooses therapies for the season.
Abhyanga, Pizhichil, Kizhi and Shirodhara, as prescribed.
The traditional herbal rice gruel, often served daily.
Rain on the roof, green gardens and fewer excursions.
Planning a monsoon stay
Rain can be heavy and constant for days at a time. Flights and roads usually run, but allow a spare day for connections. Pack quick-drying clothes and an umbrella, and choose a centre with covered walkways between rooms and treatment areas. For guests from the Gulf, the Kerala monsoon coincides with the Gulf summer.
