Why Rishikesh

Rishikesh has drawn seekers for centuries. It sits where the Ganges leaves the mountains, and is lined with ashrams, temples and yoga schools. Its fame spread worldwide after the Beatles stayed at an ashram here in 1968.

Every evening, the Ganga Aarti — a ceremony of lamps, chanting and offerings — takes place on the ghats. Each March the town hosts the International Yoga Festival.

Rishikesh is a vegetarian town, and alcohol is not sold within its limits. Most guests find this is part of its calm.

When to go

The best months are February to April and September to November. December and January are cold at dawn and at night. May and June are hot, and the monsoon (July and August) brings heavy rain and occasional landslides on mountain roads.

Areas

Tapovan

Above the river, with many yoga schools and cafés.

Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula

The area around the two famous suspension bridges, near the main ashrams.

Outskirts

Quieter, more comfortable retreats in the hills around the town.
