What a dosha is

Ayurveda describes everything through five elements — space, air, fire, water and earth. In the body, these combine into three functional principles called doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Everyone has all three. What differs is the proportion.

The doshas are a way of describing how the body and mind tend to work — how you digest, sleep, move and react. They are not organs, and they are not a diagnosis.

The three doshas

V

Vata

Air + space · Movement

Qualities: Dry, light, cold, rough, subtle, mobile

Breathing, circulation, the nervous system, elimination — everything that moves.

P

Pitta

Fire + water · Transformation

Qualities: Hot, sharp, light, slightly oily, liquid

Digestion, metabolism, body temperature and the sharpness of perception.

K

Kapha

Water + earth · Structure

Qualities: Heavy, slow, cool, oily, smooth, stable

Strength, stability, lubrication of the joints and the body’s structure.

Prakriti and vikriti

Prakriti is your constitution: the balance of doshas you were born with, which Ayurveda considers stable through life. Vikriti is your present state, which can shift with season, age, food, sleep and stress. An Ayurvedic physician assesses both, which is why two people with the same “type” may be given different advice.

The doshas through the day and the year

Morning (about 6–10)

Kapha time — Ayurveda suggests rising early and moving the body.

Midday (about 10–2)

Pitta time — when digestion is strongest, so the main meal is at lunch.

Afternoon (about 2–6)

Vata time — lighter activity, creativity and rest.

Late winter and spring

Associated with Kapha in the classical seasonal scheme.

Summer

Associated with Pitta: cooling food and routines.

Autumn and early winter

Associated with Vata: warmth, oil and regular routine.

Why a quiz is not an assessment

Online dosha quizzes can be a fun introduction, but they rely on your own view of yourself, and they cannot tell prakriti from vikriti. A physician uses pulse reading, observation and a detailed conversation — and considers any medical conditions and medicines. If you are planning a stay, let the consultation decide.
