India Medical Visa from Oman
What Omani patients and their attendants need in order to travel to Delhi for treatment, with links to the official government sources for every figure.
Is the medical visa the right one for you?
India issues a dedicated Medical Visa, separate from the tourist visa, and it is the one you want. Travelling for surgery on a tourist visa causes problems at hospital admission and at immigration. The conditions are:
- Treatment must be at a recognised Indian hospital, and you need a Visa Invitation Letter from that hospital.
- You should already have a preliminary opinion or referral from a doctor in Oman.
- It covers serious treatment — cardiac, oncology, neurosurgery, transplant, joint replacement, paediatric and similar.
- Machine-readable, valid at least 6 months beyond arrival, with two blank pages.
What it costs
The government fee is banded by passport and revised without public notice. Many facilitator sites print a single flat figure next to small print admitting the fee varies — we would rather send you to the source than have you budget against a number that has moved.

How to apply, step by step
- Send us your diagnostic reports. We obtain written estimates and a Visa Invitation Letter from the treating hospital, usually within 48 hours of the hospital accepting the case.
- Open the official portal. Only the government domain linked below is genuine; paid look-alike sites rank well in search and charge for a free form.
- Select e-Medical Visa, or e-Medical Attendant Visa for an accompanying relative.
- Enter your details exactly as they appear in your passport. A mismatch here is the most common cause of rejection.
- Upload the photograph, the passport bio page and the hospital letter.
- Pay the fee online by card. Keep the Application ID from the receipt — you need it to check status or reprint.
- The Electronic Travel Authorisation arrives by email. 72 hours is typical; apply at least 4 days before travel. The application window opens 120 days before arrival.
- Print the authorisation. It is checked at immigration and again at hospital admission.
Documents to have ready
- Passport meeting the validity rule above, plus a PDF scan of the bio page
- Recent colour photograph, white background, square format
- Visa Invitation Letter from the treating Indian hospital, on letterhead and signed
- Medical reports and a referral from a doctor in your own country
- Proof of funds covering treatment and stay, usually a recent bank statement
- Return or onward ticket
- Proof of your residential address at home
Bringing an attendant
Up to two blood relatives may travel on e-Medical Attendant Visas, applied for separately and referencing the patient file. Each attendant files their own application referencing the patient's. Muscat has several direct flights a day to Delhi, so a follow-up review visit is a day trip rather than an expedition.
The Indian mission in Oman
Most patients never need to visit in person, because the e-Medical Visa is issued entirely online. You need the mission if you are applying for a sticker Medical Visa for a longer course of treatment, or if an application is refused and you want it reviewed.
Muscat. Opening hours and the current address are on the mission's own site, which stays accurate when ours would not.

- e-Arrival Card. Since the e-Arrival Card was introduced, every foreign national must also file it online within 72 hours before landing. It is an arrival declaration, not a visa, and it is free.
- FRRO registration. Not normally required on a 60-day e-Medical Visa. Registration within 14 days of arrival applies to stays that will exceed 180 days, which in practice means a sticker Medical Visa rather than the e-Visa.
- Keep documents together. Passport, printed authorisation, hospital letter and original reports in one envelope.
- Currency. You will be arriving with Omani rial (OMR). Hospitals accept SWIFT transfer and card; keep some rupees in cash for taxis.
- SIM card. Buy at the airport — you need your passport and the printed authorisation for registration.

If treatment runs longer than planned
The e-Medical Visa cannot simply be re-entered on. Extensions are granted by the FRRO on the treating hospital's written recommendation, and you will need an updated treatment letter, recent reports, proof of accommodation and proof of funds. We prepare this with the hospital when a treatment plan changes.
